If you’re visiting Germany during the festive season you will have so many options to satisfy any and all your cravings.
Here are a few top tasty treats from our visit, for you to try when you next visit the Christmas Markets.
- Feuerzangenbowle (Fire Tongs Punch), which is made using red wine, spices, mixed citrus fruit, sugar, a dash of rum, and a rum soaked sugarloaf that is set on fire – this makes the sugar melt and drip into the wine mix adding a sweet caramelised flavour.
- All the Bratwurst and Sauerkraut you can possibly imagine. Now I know some people are not fans, but I’m a sucker for some tangy fermented cabbage.
- A sweet treat for you that you need to try is the Schokokuss or Mohrenköpfe, a marshmallow dome of goodness covered in chocolate which sits on a thin wafer like biscuit. These are so good and come in a wide range of different flavours.
- Another version of Mulled wine is Glühwein, which is the classic spiced wine drink.
- A popular and traditional treat you can find during the winter festive season is roasted chestnuts. I’m personally not a huge fan of these, as they have a distinctive taste to them, but I do love the smell of the chestnuts wafting through the street as you walk in the chilly evenings.

If your after a nice sit down meal, here are a few of our favourite restaurants:
- First up is Andy’s Krablergarten in Munich, where we had the biggest and tastiest schnitzels I think I have ever had. It’s a a cozy place that is always busy, there was a little line when we arrived but it moved quick, so we didn’t have to stand outside for long.
- If you want big hearty Bavarian meal you can’t go wrong with Münchner Stubn, a German pub style restaurant. The meal to order here is either the pork knuckle (which is just ‘Chefs Kiss’) or the beer goulash.
- For those in search for the ultimate pork knuckle, there is only one place to go and that is Haxnbauer, they are known for their world famous pork knuckles, so if you only have time to eat at one place make it this one.
- Not an adventurous eater? No problem! One of my favourite ‘safe’ places to go for a meal in a new country is Hard Rock Cafe. Yes, I know its probably overpriced and full of tourists, but if you’re a music buff its always nice walking around and checking out the unique memorabilia on the walls.
- Cafe Uhl Schneeballen, you can pick up a Schneeballen (Snowball) which is a round traditional pastry that is deep fried, dusted with a mix of different toppings and fillings. You can be find this unique treat in the town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
- When in Nuremberg and wanting a good meal, then look no further then Restaurant Heilig-Geist-Spital Nürnberg, not only do they have traditional Bavarian dishes, but this historic tavern is situated directly over the Pegnitz River, providing a unique dining experience.
- If your looking for a casual place to eat and not a huge fan of the big meaty Bavarian dishes, I can suggest Ganesha Restaurant Nürnberg, it’s a lovely Indian spot where you can just relax after a day exploring the city.
- A lovely spot for lunch I would recommend is Finca & Bar Celona Nürnberg, it’s the perfect place for a laid back meal with nice atmosphere and a great selection of dishes to choose from.
