Circular Llyn Ogwen Hike

Embark on the Llyn Ogwen hike in Snowdonia National Park. This trail winds around the stunning lake, framed by the majestic peaks of Tryfan and Pen yr Ole Wen. With its rocky paths and breathtaking views, it’s a must-do for nature lovers seeking a taste of Snowdonia’s rugged charm.

Things to know before you go:

This moderate hike begins with some boulder clambering before easing up, though the ground remains uneven. Keep in mind that the first half can be quite wet and boggy, especially in winter, while the second half follows the main road back. Distance: 4.6km Duration: Allow 2-3hrs. We did it in about 2 and half hours, as it was a wet and cold day and I had to stop multiple times to get photos along the way. Parking: There is off road parking nearby and also a small paid carpark (£3.00 for 4hrs) near the cafe, but it does get full early so aim to get there before 10am. Make sure to park legally, as they regularly inspect and ticket this area. Gear: For this hike waterproof boots, thick warm socks are a life saver, and a light rain jacket would come in handy here even in the summer months.

The hike begins at Ogwen Cottage, just like the Cwm Idwal hike. For a longer adventure, you can incorporate both lake walks into a figure-eight route, allowing you to experience both Llyn Idwal and Llyn Ogwen in a single day. From the cottage cross the road and turn left, follow the brick wall until you come across a gap in the wall with a stile and climb over. Follow the river upstream to the lake by navigating the large boulders, which can be quite challenging especially if there has been recent rain. It’s easy to lose the path at times, but keep heading towards the lake, and the route will become clearer with occasional waymarkers.

Follow the waymarkers before ascending a gentle hill away from the lake. Cross the stile and keep going. Keep an eye out for pillboxes, which were constructed during World War II to defend the A5 in case of an invasion. If your lucky, you may even get to see wild Carneddau ponies around this area.

As you near the farmhouse at the end of the lake, cross another stile and bear left towards the footbridge. Follow the upper path to avoid the farmyard, cross another stile, and descend to join the farm track. Continue along this track until you reach the main road. Turn right and follow the pavement along the lake shore back to Ogwen Cottage.

The beginning of this hike is the toughest, particularly in winter but, once you’ve navigated past the boulders, the rest of the trail is beautiful and scenic. We’ve done this hike three times, including once in freezing and wet conditions, yet there’s something about it that keeps drawing us back.

Don’t just take my word for it—experience the wonder of Llyn Ogwen firsthand. Lace up your boots, breathe in the crisp mountain air, and delight in the breathtaking beauty of Snowdonia.
